TIGER’S EYE TABLETOP

This tabletop was created to solve for a need for our dining room. The space for which it was meant was long and narrow, hence the design. It can seat six comfortably. The dimensions are 32″ x 72″ with an edge depth of 4″. It is made from a bamboo plywood. The design is very flexible in that it can be any custom length/width and also applied to a coffee table dimension.

This is a closer look at the unique edge grain. On the left is how it looks with a clear coat hi-gloss varnish and on the right is the same corner just prior to varnishing. An ottoman piece incorporating the same design style is shown below…
HEADBOARD WITH CROSSCUT BAMBOO INSERT

I created this piece because I love the look and texture of crosscut bamboo poles. (This is about as close to Tiki-style as I’ll ever get.) After about 900 slices of the miter saw, I found the crosscut “coins” to have very unique color patterns within the cross-cut. Using this natural phenomenon as a graphic element, I made patterns within the insert area with the chips that had similar patterns. This detail is best illustrated on the 2nd image below.

ORGANIC-1 COFFEE TABLE
The shape of this piece is custom to the client’s living room space which has a strong diagonal traffic flow from adjoining rooms. The curves also play off of a nearby grand piano. The client requested the same material as the Tiger’s Eye Tabletop, but with “a very organic look.” The curved shape was a departure from the simple linear design I had established with prior pieces. The legs are also bamboo plywood sealed with several coats of an Osmo sustainable stain. Below are images from other angles and a close-up.

TIGER’S EYE OTTOMAN
This is a design for which I’m currently building a prototype. The piece is meant to function as a standard coffee table and storage ottoman. The two larger parts on each side slide closed to condense to a smaller footprint. When closed, it’s perfect for those eat-on-the-couch scenarios. And after that meal, slide it open and put your feet up to comfort that post-meal digestion. There’s also storage space inside large enough for magazine. double-click images to view large – below are images of the piece closed
INDOOR / OUTDOOR BENCH
This is a design that I plan to construct in the Fall of 2008 in chair form. The design is meant to really emphasize the dynamic edge grain to bamboo plywood. The curved “ribs” to the piece offer comfort for anyone who sits on it. double-click images to view large
